Which is an example of stereotyping? A. Gollum goes to get his ring, even though Bilbo has the ring in his pocket. * B. The dwarves think that the elves are foolish, even though they don't know the elves well at all. C. Gandalf throws his voice in order to confuse the trolls, even though the trolls have done nothing to him. D. The dwarves think that Smaug stole their treasure, even though they didn't protect the treasure very well.
I'm pretty sure it's B. but just checking for another opinion.
Any time you group races or individuals together and make a judgment about them without knowing them, this is an example of a stereotype. A stereotype is a generalized or oversimplified view, usually negative, of something or someone. Stereotypes usually show that a person or character has put little thought into his or her evaluation of someone else. Stereotyping a person or group can also lead to prejudice. Prejudice means an intense dislike of or hostility toward an individual or group, not based on fact, but on what a person imagines another to be like. Stereotypes and prejudice go hand in hand. Stereotype = a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
