At that, Thorin shut his mouth and would not say another word.
Thorin thinks only of protecting his treasure; he does not consider the king's concern for the safety and well being of his subjects. His brusque, stony, tactless responses arouse the king's anger and suspicion.
Because the tactless Thorin is rude and thoughtless when he talks with the king of the Wood-elves, the king has him thrown into the dungeon.
