Mrs. Ward has a bag of candies for her class. If she gives each student 8 candies, she will have 4 candies left. If she gives only 5 candies to each student, she will have 40 candies left. How many students are there in the class?
Ooo this is tricky. So we know if she gave each student 8 candies, she would have four left. Now if she takes 3 candies from per student, after she hands them out she will have 40 left.
I'm not used to these kind of problems, but I think what we should do first is find the constant rate of the first part.
I think the answer might be 12
12 x 5 = 60 which would leave 40 12 x 8 = 96 which would leave 4
Good thinking! It would have taken me longer, but yes that is correct. That concludes that there are 90 pieces of candy, and 12 students.
