what impact did hernan do soto have on native Americans
Welcome to OpenStudy!
This question should be in the subject History, but I will answer anyway.
In 1539, the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto landed along the coast of modern-day Florida and began heading north. By the beginning of 1540, they had marched through Florida and entered into the Coastal Plain region of modern-day Georgia. De Soto and his army of men wanted one thing as they moved through Georgia: GOLD. As de Soto and his men moved northeast through Georgia they encountered native tribes who had been living in the region for thousands of years. These native people had never seen a white man before, nor had they ever seen the huge animals that the white men rode on (horses). These strange white men wore glimmering, shiny clothes (armor) which could not be pierced by bows and arrows. The Spanish also carried steel weapons such as swords and guns. Even though the Native Americans outnumbered the Spanish, the weapons of the Spanish were no match for the guns and swords of the Spanish. Hernando de Soto's march through Georgia resulted in the death of thousands of Native Americans. His soldiers killed the native people left and right as the Spanish invaded their land and demanded gold and food. Many of the native people died from the diseases the Spanish unknowingly brought with them. De Soto's expedition marched all the way through Georgia, into South Carolina, west through Tennessee and parts of Kentucky, over to Alabama and into Mississippi. His expedition was considered by many to be a failure because he did not find any gold or treasure. Most of his army was killed because of starvation or sickness. Hernando de Soto died somewhere along the Mississippi River. He is famous for being the first European to explore the southeastern part of the United States and for changing the lives of the Native Americans forever.
