What is an ion and how is it formed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An ion is a charged atom, ions are formed when an atom loses a proton or electron, thus making the atom either postively charged or negatively charged

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Ions are formed when an element loses or gains an electron. A positive ion is formed by the loss of an electron which is itself negative and negative ions are formed by the gain of an electron.
