find last years salary if, after a 2% pay raise, this years salary is $37,740

OpenStudy (iwillrektyou):

You have to kind of work backwards for this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea im lost on how to figure it out

OpenStudy (iwillrektyou):

Ok I will try to guide you through this.

OpenStudy (iwillrektyou):

Hmm... Sorry, give me a minute. I need to think of how to start. XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok this is me brandi2586. I wanted to get on my other account

OpenStudy (iwillrektyou):

Ok.

OpenStudy (iwillrektyou):

The salary last year shouldn't have a big difference from this year, because it is a 0.02% difference.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

\(\sf a \times 1.02 = 37,740\) Solve for a

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

and that's all

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

I was waiting to see how you would attempt it, but you seemed confused so I decided to lend a hand :)

OpenStudy (iwillrektyou):

Thanks. :) You worded it better than I could have.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we started with 100 parts, and then added 2 more parts to get to where we are now; so we have 102 parts. we could divide it into its 102 parts, and add up 100 of them to determine the original amount ....

OpenStudy (iwillrektyou):

You can just divide it to solve. This is working backward. So: 37,470/1.02 = answer
