When we speak of the flavor of a word, we're talking about the extra understood meanings that it carries in addition to its main meaning. These extra meanings are called: A. denotations B. definitions C. connotations D. shadings I think it is Connotations but I'm not too sure.

Denotations are the meat and potatoes of the word, what it really means. Connotations are the flip side of that, the subtle nuances you're talking about. For example, "autumn" and "fall" have the same denotations, but "autumn" also carries connotations of beauty and grace that "fall" doesn't. (That's why nobody names their daughter Fall :))
