So, you have two fractions 1/4 and 1/16. You first have to work within the ( ). so in the first ( ) you have, 5y -3. That means what ever 5y is you have to subtract three from that answer and then place that number value in the ( ) Do you understand so far?

In the Second ( ). You have 12y + 17. so that means, what ever 12y is you add 17 to that. Oh also y = the same number. in both ( )s. ok?
