To solve this, you just have to multiply the percentage with the number.
OpenStudy (iwillrektyou):
I can show and guide you through the first, and then the second, to make sure you understand it.
OpenStudy (iwillrektyou):
\[0.1 \times 25000 = 2500\]
OpenStudy (iwillrektyou):
So, she has invested $2,500 in the stock when she had $25,000

Do you think you can do the second?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Right
OpenStudy (campbell_st):
do it this way...
let x be the investment at 10% profit
and then (25000 - x) is the investment at 5% loss
and you know the overall result is $700
so
700 = 0.1x - 0.05(25000 - x)
collect like terms and solve for x
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x=13000
OpenStudy (campbell_st):
correct so the investment that made 10% was $13000
leaving $12000 with a loss of 5%
10% of $13000 = $1300
5$ of $12000 = $600
so
1300 - 600 = $700
