The civil war was fought against the north (Union) and the south (Confederate). The war all started because of slavery. The south wanted to end slavery and the North wanted to continue slavery, because of this disagreement was started. The first war to begin was in 1861 that was known as First Manassas. It was won by the Confederates. The bloodiest war was the battle of Gettysburg. It was fought for three days in 1863. In the end the Union won. One of the most rememberible events that happened during the war was the Sherman's March to the Sea. General Sherman marched through the towns of the Atlantic coast and up to Virginia. His army followed him beginning first with Atlanta. They would burn, tear up railroad tracks, raided and burned homes, and captured livestock; this was an event won by the Union. The last war that ended the civil war was the Palmito Ranch. The war ended in 1865. Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major Confederate army to Sargent Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865.
