When nitrogen and oxygen react to make nitrogen monoxide, why is the balanced equation N(2)+O(2)= 2NO? I mean why is the subscript 2, rather than just N+O=NO

OpenStudy (loser66):

Because oxygen is \(O_2\) , not just O
