The United States had gone expanded greatly because of the Gold Rush and the Oregon Trail. More immigrants had come to the United States from Ireland, Germany, Scotland and other European countries. We had also had the Industrial Revolution. This was when factories were being made, products were produced faster and people started to buy more things because the price went down. Slavery had also been abolished after the Civil War this made tensions between the North and South grow. The railroad was also growing and made industries grow faster. I hope this helps.
