how did geography discorage greek unity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One explanation for the establishment of the Greek polis (small independent units of Greek city states) in the 7th and 8th centuries B.C. is based on the geography of the ancient Greek empire and the population pressure during this time of the 7th and 8th centuries B.C. “With the country being composed of mountains, islands, and small farming valleys, this naturally caused division of the people into discrete, small population centers with their own language and religious groups”. This harsh geography of rugged mountains and islands caused the polis (city states) to develop independently of one another, because they were isolated.
