what is a degree, monomial, binomial, and trinomial? because its asking me to find whether each expression is a polynomial. and if so to find the degree and determined if it is one of those 3 please give me an example by this problem-->d+3d^c

zepdrix (zepdrix):

`mono` means `one` `bi` means `two` `tri` means `three` You count the terms between the addition/subtraction signs. In your example, if we treat d as the variable, then it is clearly a `bi`nomial because there is one addition sign separating two terms.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

The degree is the largest `exponent` of the entire expression. In your example, it would be a `c`th degree polynomial.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

It might be easier to use a number for an exponent since that's probably what all of your problems will be like :)

zepdrix (zepdrix):

4x^3 + 2x - 7 In this example, we have a `tri`nomial, a 3-termed expression. And the largest power of x is a 3, so it's a 3rd degree polynomial. So all together we would classify this as a `3rd degree trinomial`.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Wanna practice one? :) Can you classify this one? 7x^2 - 2x + 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright so would the degree be 2 and would it be a trinomial?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean a binomial

zepdrix (zepdrix):

trinomial, three terms, yes! 2nd degree! not binomial :)
