Why is cell size limited ?
larger the cell, smaller the surface area to volume ratio which will unable the cells to respire effectively. diffusion of substances will take a much longer time
To maintain homeostasis, cells must have enough surface area to exchange materials. However, as cells grow the surface area to volume ratio changes. The relationship between the surface area of the membrane and the volume of the contents of the cell becomes the limiting factor in cell size. Here is something interesting. Look at how the area (size of the surface) of the outside changes with the shape even though the volume (inside) stays the same.
because the surface area and volume ratio does not stay the same as their size increases. Because of this, it is harder for a large cell to pass materials in and out of the membrane, and to move materials through the cell.
