The number of times the digit 5 appears when listing numbers from 1 to 1000 is... So I made three cases. Case I: Numbers in which "5" appears once. _ _ 5 5 _ _ _ 5 _ 9*9 + 9*9 + 9*9 = 243. Case II: Twice. 5 5 _ _ 5 5 5 _ 5 27 such numbers and 54 "5"s. Case III: Thrice Only one such number and 3 "5"s. Total: 243 + 54 + 3 = 300.
