Which list of values is ordered from least to greatest? A. |–5|, 0, 3, –|–4| B. –7, –|–3|, 0, |–4| C. –|6|, |–3|, 1, 4 D. |–12|, –|–5|, 2, |–8|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

how yhu get the answer?

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

@ummm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Everything thing in the absolute values symbols gets turned into a positive as far as I know. So if you turn the numbers inside those into positive numbers then can you see which is the right one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[-\left| -5 \right|=-5 \] however \[\left| -5 \right| = +5\]

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

so its a?

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

@KyanTheDoodle can you help ?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

If it hasn't already been said, the bars on the sides of a number make it positive.

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

im still confuse

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

However, if there is a negative sign outside of the lines, that makes it negative again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You make the numbers inside the bars positive then you can get rid of them. if there is a sign outside of the bars apply that.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Ok. So draw a horizontal line, and then a little circle in the middle of it. Like this: |dw:1441990940438:dw|

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

The space to the left of the circle is negative, and the space to the right of the circle is positive.

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

okay

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

now im thinking its a.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Ok. Let's try it out.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

There's an issue with that answer. The bars outside of -5 make it positive remember? So it'd be the greatest instead of the least.

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

oh okay so cross off A

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Yes. Now let's look at B.

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

k

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

I don't see anything wrong with B, do you?

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

no

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Then that's your answer.

OpenStudy (emogirlatemoooocow):

ty

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

No problem.
