why does light always follows the shortest path?

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

it seems to follow the shortest path but that is i believe to do with the fact we are observing interference patterns created by, say, a prism and these occur on the "path or least action". i have Feynman's boon on QED and it's pretty cooky stuff. i don't know very much about it but i hope this helps you on your journey :-)

Energy always travels the path of least resistance would be my educated guess.
