A billboard has an area of z2 – 3z – 18 and your company would like to use this for advertising. Marketing needs the measurements of the base and height in order to craft their image. Find the dimensions by factoring the polynomial

OpenStudy (zpupster):

go ahead and factor z2 – 3z – 18 (z )(z )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(z+6)(z-3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[z^2-6z+3z-18=0\] ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need to factorize the polynomial. Your answer of (z+6)(z-3) was almost right but your positives and negatives are wrong. If you expand it you get z^2 + 3z - 18 but its z^2 - 3z - 18 in the question. When you factorize its the numbers which multiply to the last number and add to the coefficient of the middle term (with z). Therefore the answer is (z-6)(z+3) this is because -6+3 = -3 -6*3=-18

I'll give you another question to try

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Try factorize z^2 - 6z -16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(z+2)(z−8)

Yep that's right, good job ;)
