Could someone explain how you graph a function? Giving an example would help me a lot, thank you.

Nnesha (nnesha):

with the pencil :P welcome to open study ! first why the cat in the profile pic isn't smiling , TheSmilingCat?? and linear function ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol, thanks for replying, but it isn't smiling because smiling is too mainstream ^_^. Also, yes i am working on linear function

Nnesha (nnesha):

aww :( alright y =mx+b linear equation where m is slope (rise /run) and b is y-intercept lets say we have y = 3x +4 where 3 is slope and b is y-intercept

Nnesha (nnesha):

to graph linear function we should start with the y-intercept y-intercept is a point where line intersect y-axis |dw:1442182449985:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I remember going over this in class, i completely forgot about the rise over run, thank you so much

Nnesha (nnesha):

\[\huge\rm y=\color{ReD}{3}x+\color{blue}{4} ~~~~y=\color{Red}{m}x+\color{blue}{b}\] m= slope b= y-intercept

Nnesha (nnesha):

so start with y-intercept which is 4 in this equation so draw a point at 4 |dw:1442182609050:dw|

Nnesha (nnesha):

now slope is =3 3 is same as 3/1 \[\huge\rm \frac{ 3 }{ 1 } =\frac{ rise }{ run }\] so i go up 3 unit and then right one |dw:1442182704073:dw| then just draw a line
