The reason why, is because photographs don't really tell you any information about a certain subject,
News paper articles help you, but sometimes they can be biased.
A teacher can help you, but they aren't always there.
An encyclopedia is always there, it gives you valid information, and it gives you not some ones opinion, but instead, facts about that subject.
