Just a quick question (-9+i)-(4-i) Does it equal 13 or is it 13+i ?

OpenStudy (freckles):

well -9-4=? and i-(-i)=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i is an imaginary number

OpenStudy (freckles):

I assumed so

OpenStudy (freckles):

\[(-9+i) -(4-i) \\ (-9-4)+(i-(-i))\] you still need to simplify real part and imaginary part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it's -13+i ?

OpenStudy (freckles):

not quite

OpenStudy (freckles):

i-(-i) is i+i

OpenStudy (freckles):

which is 2i

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh 2i

OpenStudy (freckles):

yes so -13+2i

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (freckles):

all i did was take the terms in the first parenthesis and put a minus sign the wrote the terms in the second parenthesis
