why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Definition: The associative property states that you can add or multiply regardless of how the numbers are grouped. By 'grouped' we mean 'how you use parenthesis'. In other words, if you are adding or multiplying it does not matter where you put the parenthesis. Definition: The commutative property of multiplication states that two numbers can be multiplied in either order. Definition: The multiplication of any number and the identity value gives the same number as the result. Defintion: If you multiply a number by its reciprocal (multiplicative inverse) the product is 1.
