Primary succession is the colonization of living organisms into an area that was not previously colonized by any living things. Soil is absent, for example a lava field. This typically takes 1,000 years or more Secondary succession is the regeneration of the living community after a major disturbance. A example of this is a hurricane. This typically takes 50-200 years.
