Link to my problem it's the 3rd page number 20. Reasoning!:) thanks! http://www.miamiartscharter.net/ourpages/auto/2012/12/11/50556382/Alg%20I%20Section%204%20Problems.pdf Question- the graph at the right shows the vertical distance traveled as person A walks up a set of stairs and person B walks up on an escalator next to the stairs.!copy the graph. then draw a line that could represent the vertical distance traveled as Person C rides the escalator standing still. explain your reasoning

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you have anything so far @Vanessa123270 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I keep getting confused @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you weren't able to get started?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^^ I drew out the graph but it doesn't make sense @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

can you describe what you drew?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I drew what it told me. I drew and copied the graph and drew out the lines. I also put distance and time on it and idk what to do next😖 @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which person is on the escalator other than person C?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I haven't wrote any info yet😖 could you plz kinda help me out? Haha

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it's given in the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you mean?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which person is on the escalator other than person C? it's given in the problem

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

is it person A? or person B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hopefully that's not a guess do you see how they say it in the instructions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh okay yeah I see it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what do you notice about the lines A and B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well line A is longer and B is shorter. B is pointing a bit up

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what about their slopes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Their slopes are like straight and some curved

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which is the steeper line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Steeper line would be line A

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you sure?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

think of a hill or mountain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay then line B

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you see how B is steeper? how if you tried to walk up it, it would be harder to climb compared to line A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would be hard to climb because an is steeper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because B is steeper

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah think of it like a ramp

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

steeper line = larger slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay now that makes a bit more sense

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

since B is steeper, it has a larger slope, which basically means B is moving faster than A

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

B covers more distance in a shorter amount of time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay! Makes sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much!!:)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

B is going faster because B is walking up the escalator so would C go faster than B? or slower than B? and why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Faster because the lines are Steep

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

is C on the stairs? or on the escalator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Escalator

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

is C walking or standing still?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Standing still

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so C will be moving slower than B but faster than A this is assuming that the escalator is moving relatively fast and A is walking up the stairs slowly

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

|dw:1442286549277:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

|dw:1442286577016:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so we'd expect C to be somewhere in the middle in terms of slope can you draw for me what line C could look like?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C would be in the middle but longer and steeper

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

click on the pencil of my drawing you'll be able to draw on it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay! Cool

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait I don't see a pencil sorry I'm new to this website

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

on the drawing I did

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you see a pencil in the upper right corner?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you should see this (see attached image)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay well it won't let me click on the pencil

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

are you on mobile or tablet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mobile

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that might explain it I'm on a desktop

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

anyways, C would be any line that is in between A and B, like this |dw:1442287136060:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay I got it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

C is steeper than A, which means C is faster than A (because C is on an escalator and A is on the stairs) B is steeper than C, so B is faster than C (because B is walking while C is still)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay thank u so much!!
