You're probably thinking of the Khmer Empire, also called the Angkorian civilization. It started around 550 AD and lasted in one form or another until the mid 1400s. They could claim dominance through most of mainland SE Asia for most of that time, but that didn't include Vietnam, mostly traded between Chinese and Vietnamese control, or maritime SE Asia, which include the archipelago associated in modern times with Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The Khmer Empire was the group that built Angkor Wat
