The Galapagos islands, located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, were annexed by Ecuador in 1832. This was three years before Darwin first visited the islands. The islands are still a territory of Ecuador, although they have been declared a World Heritage site and extensive efforts are in place to protect the fragile environment.
