OpenStudy (kj4uts):

Use the table below, which gives the cost (C) of n bags of fertilizer, to decide which of the following statements are true.

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

It looks like A. the n-values are evenly spaced. B. looks like there is a constant difference Im not exactly sure about C. and D. here.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Constant means unchanging. From \(\large\rm 18.75\) to \(\large\rm 25\) we saw a change of \(\large\rm 6.25\) but from \(\large\rm 25\) to \(\large\rm 29.50\) we saw a change of \(\large\rm 4.50\). Uh oh, the space between the C(n)'s isn't staying constant, right?

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

yeah not constant

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So that makes B `not` true. Which automatically makes C `not` true because it's talking about a specific constant value.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

For the function to be linear, `C(n) needs to have constant differences.` So what can you say about D?

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

So if there not staying constant then its not true?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Correct :) So D must be `not` true as well.

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

@zepdrix A. looks like it true?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Only A? Yah good job!

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

@zepdrix Yeah only A., now for something to be linear it has to be constant? In order to be a straight line. For this problem I think it would be C. because the average rates of change are not constant?

OpenStudy (kj4uts):

@zepdrix
