a box plot is also know as a 5 number summary

it is used to show the spread in a data set

it uses 

miniumum score

lower quartile or Q1

median

Upper Quartile Q3 

Maximum score

thinks to know 

the middle 50% of the data is in the box

the lower whisker contains the bottom 25% of the data and the upper whisker contains the top 25% of the data
