hope this helps The box plot (a.k.a. box and whisker diagram) is a standardized way of displaying the distribution of data based on the five number summary: minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum.

a box plot is also know as a 5 number summary it is used to show the spread in a data set it uses miniumum score lower quartile or Q1 median Upper Quartile Q3 Maximum score |dw:1442345727309:dw| thinks to know the middle 50% of the data is in the box the lower whisker contains the bottom 25% of the data and the upper whisker contains the top 25% of the data hope that makes sense.
