Which expression is less than -(-I-4.2I)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is `I-4.2I` equal to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"brain fart" i dont know...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how far is -4.2 from 0 on the number line?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

|dw:1442363852087:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4.2? or 4.2?

OpenStudy (shreenithaa):

4.2 since the jumps are considered as positive

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

exactly as shreenithaa said the distance is never negative

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it doesn't make sense to have the distance be say -20 miles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup. lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so that is why `|-4.2| = 4.2`

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the absolute value represents distance from 0 the absolute value result is never negative

OpenStudy (shreenithaa):

maybe the "expression" is (there can be any but has to be less than the solution the problem above" 10.42/x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-(-4.2) I-4.2I I-(-4.2)I -I-(-4.2)I These are my possible answers.

OpenStudy (shreenithaa):

why do u need the one at the end and it has to have a variable in order for it to be an expression

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no idea?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am just putting what it says in my study book.

OpenStudy (shreenithaa):

now im confused????? :(

OpenStudy (shreenithaa):

what grade r u in

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11th.

OpenStudy (shreenithaa):

then i wont understand i am in 8th no wonder why anyways just incase, what book do u have

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its an algebra II book.

OpenStudy (shreenithaa):

i have algebra 1 maybe i dont have the answer sorry :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its fine:) thanks for trying!

OpenStudy (shreenithaa):

ur welcome..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 got anything?

OpenStudy (shreenithaa):

i think i got something i searched up expression in google and this is what i got In mathematics, an expression (or mathematical expression) is a finite combination of symbols that is well-formed according to rules that depend on the context. Mathematical symbols can designate numbers (constants), variables, operations, functions, punctuation, grouping, and other aspects of logical syntax.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so what we did so far is compute that I-4.2I = 4.2 we can replace the entire `I-4.2I` with `4.2` so `-(-I-4.2I)` becomes `-(-4.2)` agreed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would that be the answer?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no we're working to evaluate what number `-(-I-4.2I)` is equal to. Don't worry about the final answer right now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Aren't we trying to find what is less?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or do you want to find what is equal first?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

well the first step is to figure out what number `-(-I-4.2I)` is equal to then we do the same with each answer choice once we get single numbers, we can do comparisons to see which is smaller

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So its equal to 4.21? or? sorry I really suck at math.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hopefully you agree that |-4.2| = 4.2 and hopefully you see why `-(-I-4.2I)` becomes `-(-4.2)`

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what would `-(-4.2)` turn into?
