Yes, I have read a part of it, and from what I see in the story, Walt is a brave, strong and goodhearted person.
He is shown to be brave, as quoted here: "is not afraid of the darkness and loneliness, of man or beast or thing", and shown to be adventurous and unique, as shown here, "but he has seen the sun at midnight, watched the ice-jams on one of the mightiest of rivers, and played beneath the northern lights, the one white child in thousands of square miles of frozen wider-ness."
