From an environmental standpoint, a planet needs to have just that: a sustainable, non-hostile environment, such that oxygen can be found in the air, and plants & other flora (& fauna) can exist. I don't know if this is considered environmental, but the planet needs to be within it's Sun's "Goldilocks Zone", not being too close or far, so as to sustain hospitable temperature ranges.
