How was the economy of the South in the 1850s connected to the culture of slavery?

Not sure if this will help, but from what I've learned, the economy was dependent from the money from cash crops that the slaves were working in the South.

The agricultural economy depended on enslaved labor for its survival. People traded slaves for money, had plantations that sold lots of cash crops like cotton.
