How early is ‘early American literature?’
I ask this because Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman would be the obvious choice for a commentary on on the American way of life and the ‘American Dream,’ which purports to uphold, ‘freedom and democracy,’ and all those altruistic ideals. Thus, freedom and equity (fair chance for all to succeed) are dominant throughout. Hemmingway’s The Sun also Rises, Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby and the Beauty & Damned and Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye also discuss the American Dream. Just something to think about.

Also, there’s Mark Twain: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - freedom from oppression – slavery and John Steinbeck's works such as Of Mice and Men – nature of dreams/loneliness/powerless clear contrasts to what the ‘American Dreams aims to uphold.
But overall its hard to simply categorizes all American Literature.

Elements of persuasive writing would include persuasive techniques - alliteration, hyperbole, sibilance, ellipses, exclamations, various appeals to lets say justice, freedom, logic, simile metaphor, personal anecdotes etc.

Hopefully someone can improve my broad answers mate. I don't know much about poetry unless its the epic like the Iliad/Beowulf etc. I'm a novel man.
