Medal reward. How did the development of irrigation systems improve living conditions? A. It made people less dependent on trade. B. It allowed people to move out of town onto farms. C. It made people switch from hunting to herding. D. It gave people a surplus of food.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let's look at all the answers. A: It made people less dependent on trade. Well, it could be. With the development of irrigation, people didn't have to be so excessively dependent on trade for food. Though this could be incorrect, since the answer choice doesn't specify what sort of trade. B: It allowed people to move out of town onto farms. This also could be the answer, but not everyone wanted to live on farms. People usually depend on farmers for their food, and though some may have moved to farms, being in town wasn't an awful burden to the rest. The townspeople could just buy/trade food with farmers. C: It made people switch from hunting to herding. This doesn't sound right. Herding has nothing to do with irrigation, and though irrigation was invented, people still hunted. Herding, by exact definition, with reference to a group of people or animals, but in this case, animals to move in a group. So, C is definitely out! D: It gave people a surplus of food. Irrigation made it easier for people to water their crops, thus producing a surplus of food. Before irrigation, people had to water by hand, bucket, etc. Which one do you think? :)

@nawatobi you did not tell me the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Honestly, I think it is most likely D. I added information (Irrigation made it easier for people to water their crops, thus producing a surplus of food. Before irrigation, people had to water by hand, bucket, etc.) to back up my answer so I don't just give you the direct answer, since this kind of question may be on a future test! But, I'll add some additional information about improving living conditions... Irrigation, which helped to produce a surplus of food, made it easier to form a civilization and comfortably feed the thousands of people who were a part of the civilization.
