OpenStudy (testing123guest):

Seven subtracted from 3 times a number is equal to 9 more than 5 times the number. What is the number?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

3x - 7 = 5x + 9 --- subtract 3x to both sides -7 = 5x - 3x + 9 -- subtract 9 from both sides -9 - 7 = 5x - 3x -- simplify -16 = 2x -- divide both sides by 2 -16/2 = x -8 = x check.. 3x - 7 = 5x + 9 3(-8) - 7 = 5(-8) + 9 -24 - 7 = -40 + 9 -31 = -31 (correct)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):
