What was the significance of Luther’s translation of the Bible into German?

OpenStudy (yolomcswagginsggg):

The Luther Bible is a German language Bible translation from Hebrew and ancient Greek by Martin Luther. The New Testament was first published in 1522 and the complete Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments and Apocrypha, in 1534. The project absorbed Luther's later years.[4] Thanks to the then recently invented printing press,[5] the result was widely disseminated and contributed significantly to the development of today's modern High German language.

Ordinary people could read the Bible, and no longer had to rely on the Church to interpret it for them.

1. It allowed Germans to read the Bible without learning Latin 2. It's important because he largely invented the modern German written language in the process. 3. Once the bible was available in German people had an incentive to learn to read.
