what is | | in math?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

| | denotes the absolute value of a quantity or function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its the absoulte sign so if you have |-5| the answer is 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if I have |-5|=5 because the magnitude of the quantity is 5 and the minus sign (or lack thereof) just tells us whether we are to the left or right of 0 respectively

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha nice @shay16 picked the same number :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also if we are talking about a function... perhaps we are only interested in the magnitude of the result given an input.... so the graph of f(x) may be a curve that goes above and below the x axis but the graph of |f(x)| is strictly above the x-axis (or on it as in =0) at all times.

thanks

No problem :D
