How did the existence of European-controlled colonies in Asia transform the South Pacific during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? A fusion of Asian and European culture supplanted traditional South Pacific Islander culture. Indentured servants from Asia were sent to labor on plantations in the South Pacific. Immigrants from Southeast Asia fled to the South Pacific following the brutal Russo-Japanese War. Indian immigrants spread Hinduism throughout much of the South Pacific islands.
