What are the disadvantages of BASIC programming language?

OpenStudy (rsmith6559):

BASIC is an acronym for Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Interactive Code. It was written at Dartmouth University in 1964 to teach beginning Comp Sci students how to program on mainframe terminals. There are many parts that show a Fortran influence. It really wasn't written to be a production language.

So an disadvantage is that it wasn't written to be a production language... Right?

OpenStudy (rsmith6559):

First, we're talking BASIC, not Visual Basic, right? The last I worked with BASIC was with my Commodore 64. I've had to work with VB a couple of times. VB is object oriented, AFAIK, BASIC isn't. I don't know if BASIC has any GUI extensions. Heck, I don't know if it's been updated in 30 years. IMO, VB is an ugly language without technical merit that I can see. It's main claim to fame was that it gave mediocre programmers a choice 15 years ago. It's known to be hard to manage when programs get over 10,000 lines.
