To cut costs while maintaining the quality of education, one of the board members of a school district proposed to have the number of teachers vary directly as the number of students in a classroom. She proposed 12 teachers to teach a student body of 228 students. How many teachers would be needed if the school grows to 399 students? 19 teachers 21 teachers 20 teachers 20.9 teachers Given that a new fuel-efficient cars can drive 55 miles per gallon, how far can a car drive with nine gallons? 6.11 miles 455 miles 495 miles<--my answer 540 miles

If 12 teachers is to 228 students, then how many students per teacher?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im guessing 19

@BAdhi

OpenStudy (badhi):

so there are 19 students per teacher. Or otherwise we can say that there are 1/19 teachers per student (though its mathematically accurate, its completely absurd ;) ). From that you can find how many teachers we want to teach 399 students

OpenStudy (badhi):

if you want to show this completely mathamatically, since its given that number of teachers and number of students vary directly, We can say that the number of teachers and number of students are directly propotional, so if no. of teachers are x and number of studnets are y, we can say, \(y = kx\) where k is a constant now we need to find the value of k for that use the data provided that is, its been given that when y = 228, x = 12 after that we can find any value y for the value of x that means after that we can find number of students that are there for a given number of teachers (or even otherway around)

would the answer be 21

@Mehek14

Convert it to a ratio = 12:228. Simplify that, cos BIG NUMBERS divide by 2 is 6:114 rinse and repeat 3:57 Divide by three now 1:19 Divide 399 by 19 = 21 So that's 21 teachers for 399 students.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SECOND ONE 55 times 9 is 495. Yup.

can you help me with a few more?
