D is the answer. In "Gift of the Magi", Jim sells his most prized possession, his watch to buy Della expensive hair combs for her beautiful hair, but Della sells her hair to buy a fob for Jim's watch.
This is the ironic part. 
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, the definition of irony is "a situation that is strange or funny because things happen in a way that seems to be the opposite of what you expected". 
So, an example of irony can be, "Mike decides to face his fears and go to the wild animal part of the zoo, but a lion gets loose and attacks Mike."
