4(-3x-5)-(10+4x) Can someone simplify it?

OpenStudy (firekat97):

Firstly, what you want to do is open the brackets up. so do that and show me what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't really know what you are asking. That is exactly like it is.

OpenStudy (firekat97):

Okay what I mean is, first you want to expand the brackets so these things "( )", do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

4(-3x-5)-(10+4x) First, multiply 4 by (-3x - 5) and multiply "-", which is just -1, by (10 + 4x) So... -12x - 20 - 10 - 4x All I did was multiply 4(-3x - 5) by 4 and I made everything in -(10 + 4x) negative because it had a negative sign in front of it, which is understood to just be -1. Your next step is to add like terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like ( -3x - 5) Like expand it? Oh gosh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-16x - 30?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

-12x - 20 - 10 - 4x -12x - 4x - 20 - 10 -16x - 30 Yup! Correcto.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got that, but it looked wrong. It's just so short. Is it always that short?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like when I was doing it before

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Mhm! Sometimes it's even shorter! Sometimes it's just x. or -x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have one more, and I don't get it at all. Would you help me with that one too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(4x-9)+8(2x+3)-7x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got it to around -24x - 12 but that isn't an answer on the sheet (It is one of those horrible joke homework papers, where the answers correspond to a letter)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Compassionate ?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

(4x-9)+8(2x+3)-7x So (4x - 9) + 8(2x + 3) - 7x 4x - 9 comes out of the brackets because there is nothing in front of it If it were 2(4x - 9), we could do something with it, but in this case, we can't So now we have 4x - 9 + 8(2x + 3) - 7x Now, we CAN do something with our 8(2x + 3) (And it's called MULTIPLICATION) \[4x - 9 + (8 \times 2x) + (8 \times 3) - 7x\] We are basically multiplying 8 by everything inside of (2x + 3) So we now have... 4x - 9 + 16x + 24 - 7x Now we just add like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13x + 15? Wow I was far.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you SO much by the way!

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Yup! Good job, man! I gotta go. Don't forget to fan me if you want to keep track of me and get ahold of me when you want to. I gotta go. TTYL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(I fanned you and medaled you too! You are literally the best)
