Sputnik is the Russian word for "fellow traveler" or "satellite". Moon is a sputnik of the Earth in Russian. Artificial satellites currently orbiting the Earth by thousands are sputniks. When Russians had managed to launch the very first satellite in the history of mankind they did not come up with any impressive nickname for it. They just called it "The Satellite 1" or better known as Sputnik 1.
