MEDAL!!! Sanchez' Warehouse wants to install a 3-foot-wide ramp from the level floor to the top of the 4-foot-high platform shown above. A regulation states that for every 2 feet that such a ramp rises vertically, the bottom of the ramp must be placed 5 feet farther from the bottom of the platform. If the material from the top surface of the ramp comes in 3-foot widths and whole-foot lengths, what is the minimum length of this material that must be purchased?

For every 2 ft of height, the ramp must be 5 ft. from the bottom of the platform. The height of the platform is 4 ft. How far from the bottom of the platform must the ramp be?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

10ft?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's right. So it looks a bit like this|dw:1442971648274:dw|Use the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the length of the ramp. What do you get?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

so u mean to find the hypotenuse?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's right. What's the length of the hypotenuse?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

16+ 100 = 116 c = sqrt (116)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good. How much is that? Use your calculator.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

about 10.77

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Excellent. Now the material to build the ramp only comes in whole foot lengths. So how many feet of material will need to be purchased?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Bingo. That's your answer. Good job.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

thanks! i have another question can u help?
