I need help, not quite sure where to start.... Solve the equation: l 3x - 5 l = l 8x - 5 l HELP.... would really like to know how to solve a problem like this : )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

r u here or no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Am sorry I didn't see your reply, last night I just gave up and went to sleep..... still need help though..... @Sohal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wa reading the question and I do believe that there is an answer but it is 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you for your reply..... have no clue what to do :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=0 because on both side -5 is on so you know that only the x matters right its like this 5x+0=7x+0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok you kind of get it if its equal then the -5 fives on both sides cancel out so you get 3x=8x which 0 would be the only realistic answer got it??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hello?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes am thinking sorry but I input it and it says it's incorrect (0) ...... i have online hw so it tells me right away if it's right or wrong ..... I have unlimited tries but I have yet to figure it out .... I haven't worked one out like this one before with absolute values on both sides ...... @Sohal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait one sec Ill figure out the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok its undifinde No answer!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-5x=0 is impossible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

try that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Undefined or no solution :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hello??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Literally tried all of it and still "incorrect" -.- sometimes the software needs a specific answer to count it correct. For example one time the answer for some thing was -5 & 3 (two part answer, not an inverse function) I input it so many ways that were correct and it did not take it till I put [-5,3] .... my professor doesn't expect that but apparently this software has high standards. @Sohal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you for your time anyways ! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what website is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its called webwork ......

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Sohal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha literally right now I was working on solving x^2-x-20 by factoring and I knew it was x=5 x=-4 ...... i did a similar problem and it didn't take the answer till I put it in parentheses yet this equation didn't take it until it was without parentheses! See I told you ! I like that I have unlimited tries but it's picky on how I write it...... @Sohal

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

do you still need help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.... @Anguyennn

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

ok

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

so first thing you can do is bring one equation to the other side

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

whenever it is an absolute value, the number inside will always turn out negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok like subtract -8x+5 to the other side ?

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

hold on lemme do this on my paper before showing you :P

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

just give me a sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok ...... i got 3x-8x= 0

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

hmm I am kind of stuck on this one

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

I just know that the answer is x=0 and x=10/11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh wow, I input it and is says it's correct..... thank you ! But how do you know ? @Anguyennn ??

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

mathway.com

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

haha no problem, i apologize for not helping you out properly.

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

I understand the concept, but it hangs me loose when theres a x in it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No it's fine ! & Yes it's a bit tricky.... Maybe I should use math way a bit more often haha..... i think if you pay it shows the steps right ? I guess I know why it's so popular for a reason, cause it works haha ! Then again maybe I will just ask my professor during her office hours ..... haha @Anguyennn

OpenStudy (anguyennn):

alright!good luck :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks again ! God Bless You ! @Anguyennn
