Conservation of mass means that mass is neither created nor destroyed. That means in a chemical equation, the total mass of reactants will always equal the total mass of the products. This was discovered by Antoine Laurent Lavoiser (1743-1794)

However, conservation of mass is not true in general. The more general form is conservation of mass+energy
