I am not sure about the recrystallization technique since it was not studied in my lecture.
Its basically used to purify a compound on the basis of solubility. for instance you have some compound you extracted from some place or whatver, you first dissolve it in a solvent, the solution is filtered to remove the insoluble impurities, and the solvent is then evaporated to produce the solid compound and get a more "pure" organic compound. I think this is works for only organic compounds, but I'm actually not sure if it works for inorganics like organometallics species of the like.
After you obtain the more pure species, you can subject it to a series of tests to identify what you have, for instance, boiling point, melting point, NMR, IR, proton NMR, etc.,
