Can someone help me with Algebra I B in Connexus?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here's the problem I need help on.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Yeah I can. Just give me a second.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

The answer would be 2.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you still have to multiply the x's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you show me how to do it in a step by step process so I understand how to do it on my own?

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Yeah one second. I have to type it.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

1. Use distributive property 6^2 (x^-2)^2 (0.5x)^4 2. Simplify 6^2 to 36 36(x^-2)^2(0.5x)^4 3. Simplify (x^-2)^2 to x^-4 36x^-4 (0.5x)^4 4. Use the Negative Power Rule 36 * 1/x^4 (0.5x)^4 5. USe Distributive Property 36 * 1/x^4 * 0.5^4 x^4 6.Simplify 0.5^4 to 0.0625 36 * 1/x^4 * 0.0625 x^4 7. Simplify again 2.25x^4/x^4 8. Cancel x^4 2.25 Answer: 2.25

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

^ = x to the power of x * = multiplication / = fraction/division

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is no division x^4 * x^4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x^-2)^2 = x^4

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

When you x^4 on top and on the bottom of a fraction you cancel them out. I have done algebra for the past two years I know this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the exponents multiply and a negative times a negative is posative

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

And according to the Negative Power Rule, if you have a number to the negative power, you need to move it to the bottom of a equation to make it positive

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

You have to multiply the exponet 2 and -2 which is a negative

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

exponents*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are not multiplying a fration

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

I know that. That is not what I said.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you moved it to the bottom you would have 6/x^4 *(0.5x)^4

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Exponents 2 and -2 make -4 which has to become the denominator of the equation.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Exactly! Then the exponent 4 would have to be distributed to both the x and the 0/5

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

0/5*

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

0.5*

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

which would make 36 * 0.0625^4/x^4

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

That simplifies to 2.25x^4/x^4

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Cancel out the x^4 and you have 2.25. Do you get what I am saying?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wouldn't think so, but I could be wrong. I do understand what you are saying, but I do not agree with it. But you could be right.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

I could be wrong as well. I guess we will just have to see which is correct once the questioner (is that how you would say it? lol) gets back.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just typed this into a graphing calculator and it came back as 1 E -4 Since I don't have a value for x I am assuming it returned a one and a -4. That would make you correct, Good Job. I learned something :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMG thanks guys!
