Adding and subtracting polynomials. Question posted below..

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

\[\large (9pq^6 - 11p^4q) - (-5pq^6+p^4q^4)\]

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

\[(9pq^6+5pq^6) = 14pq^6\]

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

\[-p^4q^4 + 14pq^6 - 11p^4q\]

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

would that answer be correct?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

so i just wanted to make sure that if we are ordering the polynomials with their degrees, then the 14pq^6 won't go first right? or will it, instead of the -p^4q^4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You have it correct -p^4q^4 goes first because the degree is 4+4 = 8 which is the largest sum of the exponents 14pq^6 comes next since 1+6 = 7 then finally -11p^4q since 4+1 = 5

oh okay thank you!
